Wondering if it’s cheaper to cook in an air fryer than an oven? The amount of energy used to cook at home will depend on the appliance, foods and the functions selected.
For example, large ovens may be able to cook bigger foods, cook more at once and be well-insulated, while newer appliances may have a broader range of functions and features for reduced cook times.
However, their size may mean more energy is required to get them to temperature and more energy could be lost if access to the food is needed during cooking.
Plug-in meters allow you to measure the energy consumption of appliances with accessible sockets. Careful use of domestic smart meters may allow you to approximate your oven’s energy use.
How can I save energy when using cooking appliances?
- Only boil the amount of water you need: Prevent using energy to boil water you won’t use by only filling the kettle or saucepan with the amount you need - providing it is above the kettle’s ‘minimum fill’ line.
- Regularly descale your kettle: A build-up of limescale can affect kettle performance, so descale your kettle regularly, especially if you live in a hard water area.
- Consider a temperature-control kettle: A variable temperature kettle gives you greater control over your water’s final temperature, perfect if you don’t need it at 100 degrees every time. Ninja kettles also offer a ‘hold temp’ feature which keeps you water at your chosen temperature for up to 30 minutes – so there’s no need to reboil.
- Use a lid on pans: It might sound simple, but remembering to put a lid on your pan stops heat escaping during cooking and speeds up cooking time.
- Select the best hob ring for your pan: Using an appropriately sized hob ring for your cookware helps to avoid wasting heat and use only the energy you need.
- Boil water in a kettle: Although it varies based on the type of energy your hob uses, it can be cheaper to boil water in a modern, energy efficient kettle, rather than on the hob, as long as you only boil the amount you need.
- Keep the oven door closed while cooking:Opening your oven while cooking allows heat to escape, lowering the internal temperature. It then takes more energy for the oven to heat back up to your selected temperature.
- Utilise carry-over cooking: For some recipes, you can turn the oven off a few minutes early and leave the food inside to continue cooking with the residual heat. Baking cakes and bread require precision cooking, but other recipes allow more leeway. Always ensure food is cooked to a food-safe temperature before eating.
- Cook in bulk or batches: Batch cooking helps to make the most of the energy you have already used to heat up your appliance, by cooking more than one portion and saving it for later. One-pot meals such as cottage pies, curries, stews and lasagne are great for cooking in bulk and tend to freeze well.
