Chocolate Waffles with Caramelised Strawberry

These waffles are the perfect Valentine’s breakfast in bed or they just perfect for a lay weekend brunch. They are super chocolately and fluffy just perfect for when you fancy a sweet treat for breakfast. The caramelised strawberries they are super juicy and sweet and the make the most heavenly topping.

Chocolate Waffles with Caramelised Strawberry

  • 1 cup of white spelt flour
  • 3/4 cup of oats
  • 1 1/2 cup of almond or soy milk ( I wouldn’t recommend using rice/oat or coconut milk for this recipe as they are too watery)
  • 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoon of raw cacao powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/4 cup Filippo Berio Mild olive Oil
  • 1/4 cup of maple syrup
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • For the caramelised strawberry:
  • around 5-8 strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut sugar
  • a splash of water
  • Extra toppings:
  • maple syrup
  • Coconut chips
  • Cacao nibs
Prep Time


  1. Place the oats into your Ninja Blender and blend until you have a fine flour.

  2. Place the milk in large bowl and add the apple cider vinegar. Let it sit for few minutes until it starts to curd and become a bit like butter milk.

  3. In a separate bowl mix together the flours, cacao powder, salt and baking powder.

  4. Add the milk into the maple syrup and olive oil. Give it a really good whisk then pour the liquid into the flour.

  5. Mix everything very well unit is all smooth and let it sit for 5 minutes while the waffle iron is heating up.

  6. Pour the batter into the waffle iron and cook them accordingly to the manufacturer instructions.

  7. While the waffles are cooking make the caramelised strawberries. Simply place the coconut sugar and the splash of water into a pan and when it starts to bubble add in the sliced strawberries and let it cook for 5-7 minutes until most of the liquid has been absorbed and you are left with a sticky caramel.

  8. Remove the waffles from the iron and repeat the process with the remaining batter.

  9. Serve the waffles straight away with the caramelised banana, maple syrup and other toppings of your choice.
