Have you ever tried maca powder?
Maca has been tipped as one of top health trends of 2017 and is reported to help increase energy, balance hormones, and improve fertility. Maca is usually described as tasting like caramel, biscuits or Horlick’s. However, speak to anyone who’s tried maca powder and they will tell you that the taste can take a bit of getting used to!!
When I first tried maca I had very high expectations that it would taste like caramel biscuits and I was quite disappointed when it didn’t! I preserved with eating it and decided to add half a teaspoon to my morning smoothie and soon I began to get used to the taste. Now I actually enjoy it.
Chocolate & Maca Smoothie Bowl
Whether you’ve never tried maca before, you’re unsure about it or you love the taste, I’m sure you’ll like this chocolatey smoothie bowl.
p.s. If you don’t have maca powder you can make it without and it will still be yummy.
- 150ml rice milk
- 60g (3 large) strawberries
- 50g (1 large handful) fresh spinach
- 1 tbsp protein powder (e.g. hemp*, brown rice, vanilla or chocolate flavor)
- 2 tsp cacao powder
- 1 tsp maca powder
- 1 tsp cashew butter
- 1 pitted date (optional)
- 6 ice cubes
Chop the fruit and place all of the ingredients in your blender.
Pulse for 1-2 seconds – repeat this 5 times. Then blend for 60 seconds or until everything is smooth.
Pour the smoothie into a bowl and add toppings such as yogurt, granola and strawberries.
*I used hemp protein powder- that’s why the smoothie bowl in the photo looks slightly greenish!
